There is no such Thing as Separation of Church and State

July 8, 2008

religious_license_plateSome of you may remember Randall’s post on the Separation of Church and State from a few months back. While surfing around today I came across the following press release titled:

Why is the Price of Gas so High?

July 3, 2008

high-gas-pricesWhat’s the most you have ever spent in one day for Gas? $50? $75? $100? Before today I could have safely said my one day max was eighty bucks after filling up my wifes nearly empty SUV. Today was an eye opener! A “perfect storm” of gas needs for mechanized vehicles. I filled two cars, one boat, one personal watercraft and two five gallon gas cans for misc. yard equipment. The grand total? Wait for it… Read more

Boston Dynamics’ BIGDOG

June 30, 2008

k9-militaryI recently received an email (for the third time) about a military K9 unit in Iraq. It’s about an allegedly 200 pound dog named Brutus whose heroic rescue of four American soldiers captured by insurgents earned him the Congressional Medal of Honor. Most would read this account and immediately smell bullshit or, in this case, dog shit. But for some reason it continues to get forwarded around the world and, presumably, believed by those who receive it. Read more

Brad Pitt is Getting Married

June 24, 2008

brad-pittWell, not exactly. In September of 2006, Brad Pitt abandoned what little self-respect he had left (after abandoning America’s Sweetheart Jennifer Anniston for the former Billy-Bob Thornton-banging monster known as Angelina Jolie) and stated that he would consider marrying said monster only after gays were given the same right. Well, Brad, that day has arguably arrived! Read more

The War on Drugs. Should we Legalize all Drugs?

June 13, 2008

warondrugs.jpgIn my post about why I’m not a Libertarian I mentioned that I agree with much of the Libertarian Party’s platform on drugs, at least in theory. Here’s the jist of it – people should have the fundamental right to control what they put in their own bodies. Ok, since much of the pro-choice movement is based on the “get your laws off my body” argument, I can appreciate that position. Read more

The Dominican Reality

June 11, 2008

dr.jpgIn the ABOUT THIS SITE section of TheCandidacy.com I use some pretty strong words to describe the geopolitical situation here in the Dominican Republic (where I have lived for 5 years and currently blog from). In particular, I mention “wide-spread political corruption, abysmal public education, environmental degradation, inadequate healthcare, and alarming crime rates”. I stand by those characterizations 100%. Not surprisingly, I have taken a little heat from some Dominican friends. So, let me now put those comments into perspective. Read more

Three Ways Barrack Obama Could Improve his Popularity with the Military

June 5, 2008

armed-forces-buttonsIn January of 1993, I was in my final months of college and Army R.O.T.C at Norwich University. I already had my assignment in hand and would be shipping off to South Korea after training at the U.S. Army Field Artillery Training Center at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Life was good and those times were exciting. However, I’d be lying if I didn’t mention the overwhelmingly negative response to Bill Clinton’s inauguration that same month. After 12 years of pro-military Republican presidents Reagan and Bush (#41), it was unconscionable that an admitted draft-dodger who “loathed” the military would be the commander in chief - on day one of our careers (I actually know a full colonel who wanted to retire in the late 90’s but stayed on for a few extra years just so his retirement certificate wouldn’t have Clinton’s name on it).
