Why I am not a Libertarian

June 20, 2008

nolibertarians.jpgAbout 4 years ago I was discussing local politics with some of my high school students when one of them asked me “why can’t we get a decent government here like in the United States so more people can be prosperous?” You see, Dominican politics is just plain dirty from top to bottom. That’s not to say that American politics isn’t partially rotten too, but in some strange ways with a $13 trillion dollar economy we can afford to be. Or at least we don’t see the ugly results of any corruption on the personal level that many Dominicans do on a daily basis (more on this in future posts). Read more

Why I’m not a Republican

June 19, 2008

If you haven’t read my post on Why I am not a Democrat, it’s somewhat required reading for this post. If you have, keep reading and enjoy!

General Colin Powell is one of the most recognized and respected Americans around the globe, and yet his political affiliation and opinions were completely unknown until his illustrious 35 year career as an army officer came to an end. Military officers have a long tradition of keeping their political views to themselves while serving; they are also bound by law not to partake in party politics. This is a good thing. However, when officers gather at the “O Club” to toss down a few beverages together, they drop their guard. Having attended more than my fair share of such gatherings, I can personally attest that our service-members are overwhelmingly Republican.

Why I am not a Democrat

June 18, 2008

nodemocrats1.jpgI’ve been a registered voter for almost 20 years. When I registered to vote for the first time I was a senior in high school and registered as a Democrat because, well, in Massachusetts everybody seemed to be a Democrat. That’s not to imply that I was forced or coerced into doing so, but there was a certain wink and nudge from my high school teachers and the people from town hall who came to the school to register all of us turning 18 for the first time. So, it was with relatively little thought that I checked the box and joined the party of our then governor Michael Dukakis. Little did I know my time as a registered Democrat wouldn’t last very long. The Many H’s of Hillary

Does ANYONE actually think that Hillary (the) Clinton(s) will go away on her/their own? And what would the Mainstream Media DO if they did? Obama and McCain don’t have enough baggage to keep the media entertained. Rev. Wright, McCain’s age, and any future scandal from either one can’t hold a candle to REAL baggage.

Well…there is a way – and you have had it in your power all along. Read more

Three Ways Barrack Obama Could Improve his Popularity with the Military

June 5, 2008

armed-forces-buttonsIn January of 1993, I was in my final months of college and Army R.O.T.C at Norwich University. I already had my assignment in hand and would be shipping off to South Korea after training at the U.S. Army Field Artillery Training Center at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Life was good and those times were exciting. However, I’d be lying if I didn’t mention the overwhelmingly negative response to Bill Clinton’s inauguration that same month. After 12 years of pro-military Republican presidents Reagan and Bush (#41), it was unconscionable that an admitted draft-dodger who “loathed” the military would be the commander in chief - on day one of our careers (I actually know a full colonel who wanted to retire in the late 90’s but stayed on for a few extra years just so his retirement certificate wouldn’t have Clinton’s name on it). Daniel E. Williams for Vice President

May 6, 2008

daniel-e-williamsI recently reviewed The Naked Truth about Drugs by Libertarian Party Vice-Presidential candidate Daniel E. Williams. When I published the review I offered Daniel the opportunity to address TheCandidacy.com readers directly. This is his un-edited response. Big thanks to him for taking the time to do so. – RHM Read more

Politicians are Elitists

April 22, 2008

“You’re out of touch, I’m out of time.” - Haul and Oates.

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton recently showed Pennsylvania voters just how “down” they are with regular folks by bowling, praising Jesus and, of course, drinking with rednecks. In addition, Hillary went out of her way to pump up her pro-gun rights positions and condemn Obama’s super-liberal anti-gun stances. When asked by a reporter when was the last time she’d fired a gun or went to church, Hillary said it was not relevant. Not relevant? She’s parading around the state labeling Obama an elitist when her own tax returns dwarf those of Bush and Cheney combined? Newsflash: Almost all of our politicians are elitists! Don’t believe me? Just ask any Senator and most U.S. Representatives the following questions: Read more

13 Things John McCain is Older Than

April 21, 2008

john-McCain-is-oldI’m guest blogging today over at The Chiri Chronicles. Stop by for a visit. I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time blogging about the Democratic side of the Presidential election. So, in the interest of fairness and, more importantly, me getting a day off from writing, I’ve asked a good friend of mine (McCain supporter) to guest blog and make a case for McCain for President. That’ll be out by the end of the week. By the way, we have no set rules as to why guest bloggers are selected. Send me an email if you’re ever interested. We highly encourage dissenting opinions and rebuttals to previous posts of mine. Read more

Daniel E. Williams and “The Naked Truth about Drugs”

April 17, 2008

daniel-e-williamsIn a recent post, I condemned the legions of “keyboard commandos” on the internet. In addition, I mentioned one of the perks of being a blogger – meeting interesting people. Daniel Williams, 2008 Presidential candidate for the Libertarian Party, falls squarely into that category. Daniel is also the author of “The Naked Truth about Drugs”, a copy of which he graciously sent to me. Here’s a quick review. Comments and criticism are welcome. By the way, he’s the naked guy in the photo. Read more
